My 5 month old, almost finishing teething, Akita bitch is still mouthing, biting, and nipping. The corrections I have used are bitter apple on my hands, verbal corrections; screaming like a hurt litter mate, grabbing her by the scruff of the neck (like her Mom would), and giving a shake, cuffing her under her muzzle with a sharp verbal, deep "NOoooo BITE", ignoring her when she starts this routine, "time out" in her crate until she calms down (water, no toys etc.) She has completed Puppy kindergarten, and we continue with her obedience commands as part of everyday life. She is my 4th Akita, and the first to pull these antics. I never tolerated this type of behavior in my other dogs, and I won't with her. I do not believe in hitting a dog, so that is not the answer. If you have had this problem, or a similar situation, and found a viable solution, I would love to hear how you accomplished eliminating this biting problem. Thanks for taking time to answer.

Well, first, your dog is smack in the middle of teething. She won't be done for a couple of months.
Sounds like you need a consistent plan. If she does not stop and hesitate when you yelp, then I would do the game ends plan. EVERY time she nips, calmly say "uh oh", stand up and leave the room. You may need a gate to keep her separate from you. Ignore for a few minutes and return. The key to this working is it must be the outcome every single time she mouths inappropriately. And you must do it IMMEDIATELY. No lag time. Before a behavior stops, there may be something called an extinction burst. This means the behavior will all of the sudden seem worse than ever. This is normal. Stick to your guns and wait it out. |

Thank you for taking the time to give me this info. It sounds like a good plan, and I will put it into effect starting first thing in the AM! Your comments regarding 'extinction bursts' made me realize that she has, all of a sudden, gotten worse...if she were a child I would have to say she is going through the 'terrible' twos. Unfortunately, I cannot stand her in a corner 'til her feet turn to stone. Your insight is very much appreciated!
