Hi guys:) Thought I should add a post on why you should train your dog...

Dogs are as we all know very social animals. They belong to a group of animals that's loyal to those they care about and in return they demand attention.

But without proper training, they will behave like animals. Without proper training, you will get a wild animal, and without proper training your dog will mess up your house, break things, won't listen to you at all, bark excessively, fight other dogs and even worse; bite you or the ones you care about.

This is all because it's in her nature.

Every dog will behave like that without guidance (maybe not to the same degree, but more or less). So what obedience training does, is that it establishes a social hierarchy.

A trained dog is way more confident than an untrained dog and she may be allowed a greater amount of freedom than an untrained dog. If you want to socialize your dog in a controlled environment, you should really consider dog training classes or puppy training classes if you have a puppy.

There's a tiny bit of difference in dog training classes vs puppy training classes, and it speaks for itself. In most puppy training classes your puppy will improve its social skills and they are a great opportunity for you to start some basic obedience training as well.

This is where you build the foundation which you use to build on later in your dogs life. So in puppy training classes, things aren't that advanced and it's like kindergarten for us humans.

But if you want to get the very best out of your dog you should start doing some dog training. Through obedience training you will be able to build a lifelong bond between you and your dog, and the truth is that a trained dog is more enjoyable as a playmate, friend and companion.

Hope this helps:)

Joachim

I train my dogs myself. My mastiffs are awesome. Bassets were too. They are highly socialized etc. Even our Chows were great. And Joachim-----are you a trainer?? All dogs should be trained I agree. My dogs have all been fantastic friends--companions and guardians too --( well only certain ones lol). Not the Bassets. biggrin.gif

Hi Viv!

No, I'm not a trainer yet, but I'm getting more and more interested in dogs.
What I've done the last few months is to really start and educate myself about dogs and dog behavior.

I think it's vital that you understand your dog before doing anything else.

Glad to hear your dogs are so great! biggrin.gif
