My 8 year old lab bit my wife today. The lab walked up to my wife who was watching TV and put here head near my wifes hands as if to be petted, and after a few minutes of petting the dog went insane for about 2 to 3 minutes biting my wifes hands. I had the same experience last year, the dog walked up to me while I watched TV like she had thousdands of times before, and just bit my arm. Luckily I had a heavy sweater on. I asked my vet about it and they told me to hire a dog psychologist. But it is pretty much a random act. There is nothing going on when it happens and there is no warning. I am worried that someone will get hurt.
I have raised this dog since a puppy. What is recommended? |

The most common cause for sudden behavior changes is a health problem. I would get the dog a thorough check up including labwork (chemistry panel, CBC, urinalysis, and a thyroid panel to MSU). I would also ask the vet to do a thorough neurological exam.
If nothing turns up, then your vet is right in recommending you seek the assistance of a veterinary behaviorist (a veterinarian boarded in behavioral medicine). This is a very serious issue and should be addressed by a professional . |

Do you have another pet? Your dog may be jealous... else, JMM is correct. Your dog may have health problems. Usually, labradors are sweet and this is the first time that I've heard something of this behavior. My Lab never bit anyone. It would also be best if you have your dog injected with anti-rabbis.

Yes. We have another, younger lab. But I always give the older one food first. And they both have rabies shots. I think that this is something neurological. I have an appointment at the vet this afternoon. I am bringing my wife with her swollen hand.
This was not a bite, this was an attack. It went on for 2 to 3 minutes. It as if another dog took over my dog's body for a few minutes. Otherwise she is very kind, although I have seen her beat up the younger lab once or twice. |

My first thought was something neurological based on your description and the dog's breed and age. Never hesitate to ask your vet for a referral to a neurologist. Go with your guts.
